I’m so excited to write this post because I feel like I’ve finally nailed down the holy grail of self tanning products after MANY mistrials. In my younger (more foolish) years I was a sun goddess. I’m talking basking in the sun slathered in baby oil, and cat napping in tanning beds. ICK! Not a cute look and SO unhealthy.
Nowadays you’ll find me in the shade with SPF 50, a hat and big shades. I don’t play around with the rays, but I do still appreciate the way a nice healthy glow makes me feel. Finding that natural color took me some time, but lucky for you I’m here to share and hopefully steer you out of the ommpa loompa zone.
TIPS FOR USING SELF TANNING PRODUCTS:
EXFOLIATE before applying. I like to dry brush before I jump in the shower. I think this works even better than using an actual exfoliating body wash, PLUS dry brushing stimulates your lymphatic system, helps to reduce cellulite, and de-congests skin. Lauryn Evarts raves about it on The Skinny Confidential – for more on dry brushing check out her post here.
MOISTURIZE any extra dry areas before applying. I usually apply my every day lotion to my hands, wrists, feet, ankles, elbows, and knees. This prevents those areas from soaking up the product and looking darker or blotchy.
USE A MITT to apply. Always, use a mitt. Seriously. The product goes on so much smoother and streak free. It will save you from having orange palms (dead giveaway of a faux tan).
PAT DRY after showering in the days after application to make your tan last longer and fade more naturally. Rubbing with a towel removes the product and can leave you with blotchy areas.
OK, LET’S GET INTO THE GOODS . . . .
My all time favorite, tried and true self tanning product is the Self Tan Classic Bronzing Mousse by St. Tropez. It has the most natural color and goes on streak free. It literally takes me 3 minutes to apply to my entire body. It’s quick drying too, so I can get dressed and head out the door right after using it- which is religiously 1-2 times per week. I also use the Self Tan Classic Bronzing Face Lotion, the Gradual Tan Tinted Everyday Body Lotion (to extend a fading tan), and the Skin Illuminator in gold (game changer, makes legs look amazing!). Love them all.
These next products are more of a one day, wash off kind of thing. I use them for special occasions or a night out when I want to be a little extra. 😉 I found Body Blur by Vita Liberata by stalking Catt Sadler’s blog to find out how on earth she’s that glowy from head-to-toe. I needed to know what sorcery was behind it. Behold Body Blur- THE best instant skin finish product. It covers imperfections, smoothes skin appearance, AND reflects light- it basically turns you into a magical unicorn.
A similar product a girlfriend of mine introduced me to is this Lorac TANtalizer Body Bronzing Luminizer. It has the same effect as the Body Blur with a little more shimmer and color. I like this one layered over the St. Tropez Mousse during the summer months.
I usually don’t use self tanning products on my face that often because they can tend to be drying while greasy at the same time (trust me, it’s a thing), but I am a fan of this Lancome Flash Bronzer Face Lotion. It’s oil free and made with pure vitamin E. It actually feels moisturizing to wear. To avoid looking over bronzed I actually apply it at night and wash it off in the morning. It leaves my face with a subtle warm color. If I don’t think that far ahead, I usually just customize my foundation by mixing them together to match my body whether it’s lighter (here) or darker (here).
Alright, I feel like that was a lot of information but now you can skip all of the awkward streaks & orange mistakes and move confidently into bronze goddess skin!
Do you have a self tanning go to product or a tip that’s a game changer? Let me know!
